NEW POTATOES

Rationing Necessary

“ There has been a slight increase in the supplies of new season’s potatoes, but we are still required to ration these out,” said a produce official to the Daily Times yesterday. “ The supplies of both locally-grown and Nelson potatoes are, however, expected to increase within a short time.” New season’s potatoes are realising up to the ceiling price of 5Jd per lb. Medium supplies of locally-grown green peas are coming forward and are selling from 7d to IOJd per lb. Both locally-grown and Christchurch hothouse tomatoes are becoming more plentiful and are realising from 2s 9d to 3s and 2s to 2s 8d per, lb respectively. Moderate quantities of cherries are being received, but the main crops have yet to make an appearance. Choice lines are realising about 2s per lb, and lower grades Is to Is 6d. Gooseberries are bringing from 3d to 4d per lb, while lettuces are fetching. 2s to 3s 6d a dozen, according to size. . Strawberries are coming forward but not in large quantities. Choice Jib punnets are realising Is 9d to 2s 3d, and lib punnets are bringing from 2s to 2s 9d Spring cauliflowers are being sold from 5s to 15s a dozen, according to quality, and spring cabbages from 5s to 8s a case. Medium supplies of ■' white turnips are reaching the market at 5s 2d per dozen bunches, and spring carrots are realising 5s to 7s per dozen bunches. A few North Island grapefruit have been received and arc retailing up to 37s a case.
