India Criticises Russian Proposals NZPA—Copyright NEW YORK, Nov. 23.
India defended Britain and the United States as peace-loving nations. Sir Benegal Rau, the Indian delegate, told the United Nations Main Political Committee that India would support the joint British-United States 12-point peace programme. He said he would have found no difficulty in supporting Russia’s plan for banning the atomic bomb, and for a Five-Power peace pact, had the Soviet not coloured its proposal with a clause calling for “ condemnation of preparations for a new war, particularly in he United States and the United Kingdom.” Sir Benegal Rau, after paying a tribute to the “moral quality” of the British people, said: “ I cannot imagine anybody in the United Kingdom wanting another war. There may be some who think that she may be forced into another war, unless her defences are strengthened.
“It is also true that measures for defence may, in an atmosphere of distrust and suspicion, be misunderstood as measures for an attack, but I cannot believe that anybody in the United Kingdom is really preparing for a war of aggression.” Iceland, Venezuela, Bolivia, the Netherlands, Chile, Burma and Sweden strongly criticised the Soviet proposals, and announced their decision to support the United States and British resolution.
