WINNING DESIGN
CANTERBURY MUSEUM
DUNEDIN FIRM AWARDED CENTENNIAL PRIZE The award of first prize for a design for the extension of the Canterbury Museum as a centennial memorial has been made to the Dunedin firm of architects, Miller, White and Dunn. The complete remodelling and extension of the museum is estimated to cost £200,000. The first prize in the competition, which was open to all registered architects in New Zealand, is valued at £SOO, and the winning firm will also receive the New Zealand Institute’s scale of fees for its work. The present museum is to be completely rebuilt except for the wing facing the gardens and the elevation fronting Rolleston avenue. The remainder of the building has .to be completely gutted and replanned. The design, however, had to preserve the character of the existing building. The entry of the Dunedin firm was regarded by the judge, Mr Horace Massey, of Auckland, as the outstanding design submitted. The Dunedin firm was also responsible for the design of the extension to the Otago Museum which will form the centennial memorial of this province.
