THE THIRD ROUND

Women’s Championship Golf Australians Prominent PA INVERCARGILL. Nov. 7. The form of the players showed an improvement when the third round of the New Zealand women's golf championships was played at Otatara this morning. Early-morning rain threatened to make conditions uncomfortable, but the weather was beautifully fine when play started. The elimination of the Victorian champion, Miss B. Cheney, by the rising young Auckland player, Miss R. C. Hodges, by a margin of 5 and 4 was a feature of the play. Out in 41, Miss Hodges was 2 up at the turn. She went on strongly, and was 4 up by holing a chip for a birdie 2 at the short twelfth, and 5 up with a birdie 4 at the 426-yard thirteenth. Miss Hodges took the game by 5 and 4 when the fourteenth hole was halved in bogey 5.

The match between Miss Pat Borthwick, the Australian champion, and Mrs R. S. Fullerton Smith (Marton) produced the best golf of the morning. Out in 40 to her opponent’s 41, Miss Borthwick was 1 up at the turn. Mrs Fullerton Smith squared the game by running down a 15ft putt to take the tenth hole with a birdie .2 to 4. Miss Borthwick drew ahead again with a bogey 3 to 4 at the short twelfth, and, though stymied, won the 426-yard thirteenth in 5 to 6 to be 2 up. Mrs Fullerton Smith got one back with 3 to 6 at the sixteenth. They halved the short seventeenth in bogey 3. which placed Miss Borthwick dormie 1. Both players played splendidly to the home green, Miss Borthwick taking a hardfought game by the smallest possible margin when the hole was halved in birdie 4.

Mrs Jackson Ball (Wanganui), the reigning champion, was at the top of her form, and played steadily to defeat Mrs W. E. Henely (Auckland) by 5 and 3.
