CADET UNIT CAMP
WEEK AT BURNHAM-FOR SCHOOLS SPECIAL TRAINS PROVIDED Complete army cadet units from the King’s High School and Otago Boys’ High School will go en bloc into camp at Burnham for' the first time in February. About 350 boys from the King’s High School, under the command of Lieutenant-colonel R. Fraser, will spend from February 21 to 28 at Burnham, and about 320 boys from the Otago Boys’ High School will be* in camp from February 13 to 20 under the command of Major J. L. Anderson. Special trains will be used to transport the boys from Dunedin to Burnham, and once in camp, they will be an almost completely self-contained unit.
The camp, which takes the place of the annual barracks week at the two schools, will feature a diet scale approved by the Health Department. Only half of each day will be devoted to military instruction. The remainder of the time will be spent in sport, recreational work and educational pursuits. Administration and quartermaster duties will be controlled by the units themselves, with only minor assistance from the regular force staff at the camp.
The Air Training Corps units of both schools will also go into camp with the army cadets. Most of their time will be spent, however, at the RNZAF ‘station at Wigram. They will sleep at Burnham and travel by truck to the Air Force station each day. At Burnham the army cadets will receive instruction in infantry training, artillery, three-inch mortar, intelligence, signals and military engineering work. At least one cook from the Regular Forces will be allocated to each cookhouse, but the school units have to find the other necessary assistants for the cook. The army pays the extra cooks, but both schools, are at present having difficulty in finding assistants.
