Rowing Clubs Show Activity
All rowing clubs on the harbour are now a hive of activity with the new season well under way, and preliminary reports suggest that rowing should receive a big imputus in Otago this season as the clubs are beginning to put their weight behind the Otago Rowing Association in order to raise the standard of the sport and encourage newcomers to become interested. Unfortunately, October is always an indifferent month so far as conditions for rowing are concerned, and with the continual north-easterly winds, the oarsmen's worst enemy, clubs have been restricted in geting crews on the water and coaching novices. This factor is more evident in the Upper Harbour —the Lower Harbour clubs always seem to enjoy better water conditions and are able to give learners more boat work early in the season. ~ It is pleasing to note that both the Port Chalmers and the Queen’s Drive Clubs are receiving their quota of new members from among the youth of Port Chalmers and surrounding districts, and the indications are that the campaign undertaken by the two Lower Harbour clubs to increase membership has been really worth while. The Otago ahd North End Clubs are still concentrating on novice oarsmen and little water work has been done by the experienced, oarsmen of these clubs who have been assisting the coaches with the new recruits or putting the final touches to racing equipment in- preparation for the regatta season that will begin towards the end of .November. National Archery Championships The Wellington Archery Association has plans well in hand for the 1950 national tournament which will be held from Monday, March 6, to Saturday, March 11 (inclusive). The championships will be held at Athletic Park. -
