NATIONAL BRAKE CHECK
IMPROVEMENT ON LAST YEAR TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT’S CAMPAIGN PA WELLINGTON, Nov. 3. Returns so far received by the Transport Department in its national brake check show that about 4| per cent, of the motor vehicles examined have poor brakes. In last year’s campaign 10 per cent, had poor brakes. At the end of the first two weeks of the check, the brakes of 4008 motor vehicles had been tested. Of these, 2528 had good brakes, 1291 fair brakes, and 189 poor, non-conforming brakes. The inspectors conducting the check issued 78 traffic offence notices. Of the 1203 private cars tested in the second week of the check, 698 had good, 428 fair, and 77 poor brakes. A check of 385 light trucks showed 225 with good, 143 with fair, and 17 with poor brakes. Among the heavy trucks tested, 164 had good, 85 fair, and 9 poor brakes. Seventy-three other vehicles also had their brakes tested, and of these only one had poor brakes The inspectors report that many people took notice of the preliminary publicity about the brake check and had their brakes adjusted. The Transport Department’s figures show that in the Oamaru and Palmer ston areas, near Dunedin, and in Central Otago, 235 private cars had their brakes tested in the first two weeks, 189 having good, 41 fair, and 5 poor brakes. Eighty-one light trucks had good brakes, 37 fair, and 3 poor. Three traffic offence notices issued were all given to private car owners.
