Cardinal Spellman, who spoke at. the airport after his return from a visit to Europe, said Americans had given millions of dollars, for ’ the relief of Dersons in war-stricken areas. lne money was used for food, clothing and medicine. Mr Manuilsky alleged m the United Nations that Cardinal Spellman had given Cardinal Mindszenty 30,000 dollars two years ago to finance ai plot against the Communist regime in Hungary He further alleged that tne United States was backing what he called the “ revolutionary activities of the imprisoned Hungarian Primate. Cardinal Mindszenty was sentenced to life imprisonment foi espionage against the Hungarian Government.
