EIGHTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

FROM THE FILES OF THE ©tago Bathe TMmes, DUNEDIN. OCTOBER 8, 1864. Messrs Hugh Kirkpatrick and Co. advertise an extensive range of men's and boys’ ready-made clothing, including 200 pairs of men’s tweed and doe trousers at 10s each, good tweed vests from 6s 9d, Bedford cord trousers from 14s 6d, Scotch tweed suits® '4os, and an immense stock of Crimean shirts, commencing at 4s 6d. A correspondent informs us that some important discoveries are reported to have been made at Cromwell. the Dunstan, and Manuherikia. Mining affairs generally are improving, ' and the population at Cromwell is steadily increasing. A company has been formed for turning the course of ’ the'Molyneux at Quartz Reef Point.

We* are informed that the' rush to Hills Creek, reported last week, *is progressing favourably. Most of the -men are making wages. A further rush has taken place three miles and a-half .below Hill's Township, on Blackstone Hill, or more commonly, known as Shield’s woolshed. Our correspondent was told that soz to the tub had been made, and that the sinking ’ was 25 .feet. # ‘ '

It is understood that the construction of a line of telegraph poles from Port Chalmers to the Heads, as a part of the general system of telegraphic communciation throughout the Colony, will shortlybe commenced. The route by which it is expected thd“line will be carried is across the Quarantine Islands to Portobello, and thence to Taiaroa Head. This is understood to be the line selected by the engineer, and 'it • certainly appears to be the mpst practicable. There will be a considerable ■ space over which the line must be .'carried. 1 but the disadvantages of a -’submarine cable in a strong tide-way • will be obviated. The poles for the main north line are now erected along the road into Dunedin, parallel with the existing line, and the wires will shortly be put up. A small vessel is now alongside one of the hulks for >the reception of coils of the wire to ~be landed at Waikouaiti.
