Hospital Beds Available

PA WELLINGTON, Sept. 27. Shortages of nursing staff still necessitated the temporary closing down of approximately 1000 hospital beds, stated the Health Department annual report received by Parliament to-day. Figures quoted in the report showed there were available 14,12.3 public hospital beds at March 31.‘ 1948, or 7.8 per 1000 of population. Of these, 1542 were maternity beds and 2416 were for infectious diseases, including tuberculosis. There were also 2641 beds in licensed private hospitals, or 1.4 per 1000 of population. Of these, 761 were maternity beds. , The total of public and private hospital beds, excluding mental hospitals or charitable institutions, was 16./64, or 9.2 per 1000 of population. ■ ,'
