DETRACT’S CONDITION

EARLY WIN PROBABLE Of all the horses worked at Wingatui yesterday morning, none looked in better condition than Detract, whose galloping ability is in keeping with his looks. The Defaulter five-year-old has had three starts this season for a win, a second and a fourth. On the first day of the Grand National meeting he made a great effort to win the Avonhead Handicap of one mile, with the steadier of 9.11, but Double Bid, who had a pull of 251 b, beat him home with a late run. On the second day of the meeting he registered a grand performance to win the Sumner Hack Handicap, of nine furlongs, with 10.0, from Snow Saint 8.9 and Flibbertigibbet 8.12. His winning margin was three lengths.

On the third day he was given 10.7 in the Redcliffs Hack Handicap, of one nnle and a-quarter, and he was unlucky not to finish closer up than fourth, as he was checked on the home turn. Detract, who is a first foal, is from Trapeze, by Ringmaster from Merry Miss (imp ), bv Son-in-law from Merry Lassie, by Black Jester from Country Maiden, a mare tracing back to Ayrshire, and he races in the interests of Mr E. R. Curtis. He will eventually be put to jumping, but before that comes about he should be a good winner on the fiat.
