Eulogize Suffers Unfortunate Mishap

Special to the Daily Times CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 27

Though the Riccarton contingent did well on the first day of the Dunedin meeting, where they won five races, there were some disappointments, Terminus, Cast High and the two-year-old Pastel being three favourites from here to fail badly. J. S. Shaw brought Pastel home after her race in the McLean Stakes. In spite of a bad barrier position, she was prominent to the straight, but she did not run on. It was found later that she had met bad luck on the jourhey, one of her legs being cut. It is not considered serious, and the present intention is to race her at Trentham next month.

Eulogize was unable to start in tho Ranfurly Handicap at Wingatui on Saturday. He was cast in his box and received further damage to the knee that was injured in Auckland last summer. It was an unfortunate mishap, as it will mean a few weeks of idleness.

The two-year-old Lady June, who was allowed to miss her engagement in the McLean Stakes, may make the trip to Wingatui tor the second day. She will at any rate be an acceptor, though her programme may depend on a favourable barrier position. G. S Barr has an addition to his team, a three-year-old filly, owned by Dr McLaughlin, of Dunedin. She is by Kincardine from Dinah Dhu, an Australianbred mare by Caledon. The filly will require some time before she is ready to start on her racing career.

The change from winter conditions came into force this week. Several of the trainers were out before breakfast this morning, sending their teams .along in useful tasks. The work is split up. however, as many trainers prefer to wait till later in the morning.
