A motion, of sympathy with the relatives of Dr D. M. Rickard was passed at the meeting of the council of the University of Otago yesterday afternoon. In proposing the motion, the chancellor, th® Rev. D. C. Herron, said that Dr Rickard, who had graduated last year, had gained the Colquhoun Memorial Prize in systematic medicine and the McCallum Medal in medicine.
A motion congratulating Mr John Bennetts, M.8.E., of Coal Creek, Roxburgh, who will this month complete 50 years' service as a councillor in the Tuapeka County,.was passed at-the annual meeting of the Otago-Southland Counties’ Association yesterday. Professor A. H. Tocker’s resignation from the position of professor of economics as from February 28. 1950, was accepted with regret at a meeting of the Canterbury University College Council on Mon-* day. Professor Tdcker was born in New Zealand in 1884. He was edur-ated at Victoria University College, WelLngton. and graduated bachelor of ar.s ir. ,915. He took his master of arts degr- e two years ater In 1943 he was appointed rector of Canterbury College, a position from which he retired last year, when Dr H. R. Hulme was appointed permanent academic head. The chair of economics at Canterbury College has been offered to Dr C. Westrate, professor of economics at the University of Leiden, Holland.
