GUIDE TO THE BUSH

A USEFUL VOLUME Our New Zealand Trees and Flowers. By E. C. Richards. Second edition. Simpson and Williams. 355. The appearance of a second edition of this volume is a welcome indication that it is finding its place as a guide for the non-botani6t to the wealth of New Zealand flora. Its divisions into Trees, Shrubs, Climbers and Flowers are a classification suited to the needs of the most untrained observer and provide starting points from which to commenct the task of identification. The numerous illustrations—-photo-graphs and sketches—are signposts along he way. Then the descriptions themselves are non-technical, as far as possible—and there is a technical glossary at the back. Several improvements are to be noted in this revised and enlarged edition. The arrangement of the subsections is more clearly indicated by using different types. Maori names are usually translated and syllabified. There are several additions to Trees, several more to Shrubs and substantial additions to Flowers— including previously unnoted small orchids, ranunculi cresses, sundews and willow-herbs.
