FOOD FOR FISH
ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY’S PLANS BULLIES AND KOURA The future policy of the Otago Acclimatisation Society was stated at the meeting of the society’s council last night. The work of the society would be providing fish food in dams and runs instead of fish said Mr J. A. Miller, chairman of the Angling Committee. The possibility of the standard of fishing being lowered by wrong feeding was stressed, and smelt in Lake Taupo was cited as an example. It was agreed to proceed with the stocking of dams with bullies and lcoura and to communicate with the Fisheries Laboratory for information on further suitable fish foods for inland waters. Advice from the Marine Department that a regulation waiving the right of societies to dispense with the bag limit during angling competitions was commented on by the council. Mr E. E. Young said that the bag limit of 20 was seldom attained. He believed that, because of this, societies should have the right to dispense with bag limits during competitions. Others thought that the regulation was acceptable although it would not prevent extra fish being killed. Anglers who took more than the limit would throw the smaller fish back, keeping 20 of the largest The curator of the fish hatcheries at Waitati reported that the stock pheasants were now in the breeding pens, and all birds were in excellent condition A total of 40,000 fry had been liberated in the Silverstream. The secretary, Mr L. Millar, said that river reports would be broadcast from 4YA at 7.10 p.m. each Thursday.
