POSITION IN DUNEDIN

Night overtime work took place on the Dunedin wharves last night, for the first time since the ban was imposed. Although normal hours of work were resumed on Friday morning, there was no work available in the’ evening, as there were no ships in port. The only vessel at Dunedin yesterday, the coaster Waipiata, provided work for about 100 men during the day and evening. _ Again to-day the Waipiata will be the only ship m port, and will remain so until the Korowai and the. Olivebank arrive sometime to-morrow. The Katui and the Holmglen, which were also due to-morrow, have both been delayed at Wellington for a day or two. Apart from these two coasters, six ships, including four with overseas cargo, are expected at the port before the end of the month. While during the last week there has been little shipping at Dunedin, there has been none at all at Port Chalmers. Indeed, during the whole of the dispute only two or three ships arrived at the lower port. During that time Port Chalmers men, whenever possible, were engaged at Dunedin. Within several days, however, there should be ample work available at Port Chalmers, especially when the Empire Star and the Tamaroa. from Liverpool ana London respectively, arrive. Each ship has over 1000 tons of cargo to unload, and in addition the Empire • Star wifi uplift a large cargo of Otago produce for London.
