EMIGRANT WINS

FAULTLESS PERFORMANCE SQUASH RACKETS CHAMPION PA TIMARU, July 31. Producing the best squash that has been seen in New Zealand to date, J. A. Gillies. Invercargill, won the South Island Squash Rackets Championship in Timaru yesterday. Gillies beat the reigning New Zealand champion, M. J. Soufer, Timaru, in the sem: final, with a faultless performance, and went on to beat W. E. Renton, Timaru, in the final match, which went to four closely-contested games. Gillies, who recently came to New Zealand from England, was a finalist in the British Amateur Championship in 1946. Renton retrieved brilliantly to hold Gillies from the front of the court, in the final, but Gillies, with beautifully executed drop-shots kept the games slightly in his favour. The final score was 5 —9, 9—5, 9—5, 9—6. The South Canterbury titles went with the island titles.
