JUNIOR TEACHERS
VIEWS OF EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE
Mr C. Allen presided over the June meeting of the Dunedin sub-branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute. Mr Hawkins spoke of the loss suffered by Otago teachers by the death of Mr R. W. D. Maxwell, chief inspector of primary schools, and a motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives. In connection with the Museum service to schools, a committee was appointed to work in conjunction with representatives of the Headmasters’ Association and the Museum officer, Mr Lockerbie. The principal business was the discussion of the problems of probationary assistants and junior teachers. Two resolutions were adopted—(l) That the committee of management place before the Otago Education Board the question of extra-mural and part-time students at Otago University, where time tables are now so arranged that it is becoming increasingly difficult for teachers to complete university degrees. (2) That the department be urged through the Education Board to use the services of specialists who are fully qualified teachers in the present teacher shortage emergency. This would- allow probationary assistants and senior college students to complete their training.
