Condition of Studs Is Credit to Owners

A round of visits to stud farms and racing establishments on the Taieri Plains on Saturday morning proved very interesting, and the condition of the horses and properties is a credit to those in charge of them. A call was made at Mr L. C. Hazlett’s farm at Salisbury, where Mr Andy Cassels, who at one time rode over jumps, is in charge. The sire Sir Galloway was paraded, and a visit was paid to the matrons’ paddock, among the mares beine Pianiste (Gustavo —Saxophone), Petacci (Defaulter —San Marino), Whistle (Paper Money—Callbird), Messina (Gustavo—Turbine), Mary Pratt (Song Bird—Compression), San Marino (Gustavo —Ravenna), Saxophone (Nigger Minstrel—Compression), Good Taste (Gustavo —Compression), and Amy Johnson (Tractor—Ravenna). There are several foals by Sir Galloway running on the farm, and they are all very docile. Mr Hazlett has only Stagestruck and Runaway in work, but unfortunately Runaway has been -slightly amiss and may not be raced at. the Dunedin meeting. A visit was also paid to Mr H. Halliday’s farm, where F T. Anning is in cnarge Among the mares are Lady Paigle, who has a particularly nice yearling colt by Defaulter; Slackline, who Is in foal to Finis and is going to Royal Chief; Black Bridge," a sister to Foxchase and in foal to Neptune; and Espadrille, who has a Niehtmarch filly running with her. Mr Halliday also has the pacing mare Rustic Gold, who Is by Gold Bar from Rustic Maid, the dam of a fpmily of winners, including Free Fight l and Chamfer. - She is to be mated with Light Brigade. The horses in training are Mature, a member of the Eulogy family, who is destined for the stud, Flying Trixie, Silver Spray, who will probably have her last race at the Dunedin meeting and will \go to Balloch, and Social News, a charming two-year-old filly by Paper Boy from Lady Nordica. Mr Halliday intends to make his property something of a show place as well as a stud farm, arid thousands of tulip and gladioli bulbs are being prepared for early planting. • Jottings Money Bird has developed into a good hurdler, jnd in his present form he may get on the winning list again before long. A rising three-year-old by Salmagundi from Trivet in D. P. Wilson’s stable has been named Ash. Dam of Western Winner Mae West, the dam of Western Winner, is deep in foal to Haughty Winner and will probably be sent to the Windsor Park Sire, Tormie. May Not Stay Dark Chief was just touched off at Timaru on Saturday. The Wingatui-trained galloper is smart over a short course, but a race over a distance may test him. Record Field for Derby Thirty-nine horses survived the final acceptance for the Derby, which will be run on Saturday. The original entries totalled 417. The largest field up to now was 34 in 1862. Thirty-two ran last' year. The stake money this year is worth £17,125, a record for the race. The winner will.receive £14,170.
