WELL CONTESTED GAME
KAIKORAI beats port
Kaikorai defeated Port Chalmers by 15 points to 9 on the latter’s home ground after a hard and evenly contested game. The superiority of the forwards gave the Kaikorai backs the greater share of the ball, but the Port defence was sound, only R. Waldron having sufficient thrust to penetrate the Port line. D. Grant, at first five-eighth, gave a sound display for Port Chalmers, serving his supports well on attack, and finding touch accurately when on defence. B. Barnes, who replaced R. Snell, ably led the Kaikorai forwards, who hunted the ball closely throughout. L. Marks was also prominent in the Kaikorai pack, showing to advantage in both loose and tight play. Kaikorai led by 6 goals to 3 at half time, R. Waldron kicking a dropped goal and a goal from a penalty for Kaikorai, and J. Smith ki iking a goal from a penalty for Port Chalmers, while in the second spell B Barnes scored a try after receiving the ball from Waldron following a ru6k close to the Port- line. Waldron scored a try and kicked a goal from a penalty. For Port Chalmers J. Smith kickfed another goal irom a penalty and L. Trainor scored a try In the last few minutes before the final whistle. Port Chalmers pressed hard on the Kaikorai goal-line, with backs and forwards combining well in an open and fast attempt to score. D. Elder and L. Lean, who was playing his first game for the season, worked hard in the Port Chalmers pack.
