EIGHTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

FROM THE FILES OF THE ©taoo {Times DUNEDIN, MAY 28, 1864. About half-past nine o’clock yesterday morning, as a result of a shot at Bell Hill, a large stone struck the roof of the Courthouse, came through the roof immediately above the table and started the underlining. Another large stone was picked up outside the window at the back of the Bench. A narrow escape from what would probably have been certain death to several human beings occurred at Bluff on Thursday night, the 19th inst. It appears that a boat was taking 23 passengers, with luggage, to the steamer Aldinga, when she filled with water, and the mail boat just came up in time ■ to take the passengers out. Business this week has been rather ' more active owing to the execution of some small orders from the northern ports. The return of a large number of miners from the Peforous Sound \ will tend to revive the drooping spirits of our up-country storekeepers, and : -< we may look for a little more life in our markets next week. Flour conv tinues to sell slowly at £35 per ton. The demand for bacon and hams has improved, but prices are low. Candles, especially Belmont's, are sought after i for shipment to the north, where stocks are said to be very light. One shilling and a halfpenny is paid for lib packets.
