SOLE CANDIDATE

MISS NEW ZEALAND CONTEST AIR FORCE ASSOCIATION’S NOMINEE Miss Vivian Wallace, the Air Force Association’s nominee, is the only candidate for the Miss New Zealand contest who has come forward in Otago. The association is still engaged in raising funds to provide the £IOO required for the entry fee to the competition, but is confident that this amount will be forthcoming before the end of the month, when the entries close. Owing to a lack of support at the ball, the association’s financial programme lost some ground, but no great difficulty, is expected in raising the money to allow Miss Otago to go forward to the final judging. The judging in the South Island in places which have more than one candidate is to take place early next month. The judges will be at Invercargill at the King’s Birthday weekend to decide the Southland finalist.

’ The final judging will take place at Wellington on June 17. and the candidates will appear at a Miss New Zealand ball after the judging. Official advice was received at the Miss New Zealand quest headquarters yesterday, states a Press Association message from Wellington, of the candidature of Miss Beryl Waugh, aged 25. of Te Aroha. She was educated at Te Aroha High School, where she passed the university entrance examination. At present employed in a bank in Auckland, Mis Waugh has an active interest in outdoor sports, her favourite being swimming. Being the only entrant for her district, she automatically qualifies for the final judging in Wellington as Miss Bay of Plenty. Her nomination fee was subscribed by citizens of Te Aroha and the surrounding district. Advice has also been received that the Canterbury Aero Club has selected the 21-year-old Yvonne Wright as its candidate.
