LICENSING SYSTEM EXTENDED COMPLETE STATE CONTROL NZPA Special Correspondent Rec. 8 p.m. LONDON, May 24. Cape Town messages report that the South African Government announced that as from June 30 South Africa’s import licensing system wopld be extended to all goods entering the Union and not to certain classifications only, as at present. The Acting Minister of Economic Affairs, Dr T. E. Donges, who made the announcement, said the amount of money available for the pei'iod July to December was insufficient even to pay for the necessary raw materials and capital goods. After June 30, licences' would be issued only in exceptional circumstances for goods needed to maintain public health and to maintain essential services.
The announcement means that South Africa’s purchases of British goods during the period July to December will be limited to 25 per cent, of the 1948 figures. The value of the total British exports to South Africa last year was £109,600,000.
