BIG LOSS SHOWN
GRAND OPERA IN EDINBURGH Some surprise was expressed when it was announced that notwithstanding the high admission charges, the Do- 1 minion visit of the Italian Grand Opera Company, which has just finished a remarkably successful season in Dunedin, would scarcely, balance its budget. That the New Zealand enterprise may even be regarded as fortunate in this respect is shown by the annual report of the Edinburgh Festival Society, Ltd., for the year to November 30 last. “Don Giovanni” and “Cosi fan Tutte” were produced by ,the Glyndeboume Opera for the society, 29,000 persons attending the 18 performances. This resulted in a loss of £10,992. The society was much more fortunate with its orchestral and vocal concerts, these having shown a surplus of nearly £15,500. The Boyd Neal Orchestra’s season of 10 concerts also returned a good profit.
