MAIN SUPPLY BASE
AUSTRALIA’S PACIFIC ROLE OBJECT OF NEW PRODUCTION COMMITTEE N ZP A—Copyright Rec. 9. 20 p.m. CANBERRA, May 16. The Minister of Defence, Mr J. Dedman, said to-day that the object of the recently announced Joint War production Committee was to convert Australia into a main supply and strategic base for the British Commonwealth in the Pacific. The new committee would be responsible for broad policy in gearing Australian industry to meet supply demands by Britain and America in the event of another war. The decision that Australia should shoulder a bigger part of the burden of defence for the British Commonwealth in the Pacific had been made a long time ago. The responsibilities and functions of the new committee would be to correlate the current material requirements of the services and the resultant production programmes, study the industrial war potential in all its aspects, make recommendations necessary for the retention of the existing industrial capacity and the creation of new capacity, and coordinate planning for the supply £f raw materials and of industrial production to meet requirements in war-. The committee would report regularly to the Council of Defence on these matters. .
