SOUTHLAND FREEZING WORKS FARMERS’ DISCUSSION Special Correspondent INVERCARGILL, May 16. “ I am not in a position to throw any more light on the matter than what you already have. The decision lies in the hands of the Minister, and T am surprised that he has not made his decision before now,” said Mr D. H. Cockburn, in his address to the provincial conference of the meat and wool section of Federated Farmers of Southland to-day. After considering the evidence from the present works labour unions, the farmers and other interested bodies, the Meat Board had reached the conclusion that another freezing works licence was not warranted in Southland. “The major question at present is that of space,”, continued Mr Cockburn. “How are the works making out with their space? They apparently had enough space to cope with the stock offering. By what evidence was before the board that was still the position. At this stage a member suggested that the discussion of space would be confidential, and the meeting then went into committee.
