POTATO CROP
THE FARM
SCARCITY INDICATED RED CLOVER YIELDS EXCELLENT On present indications it seems certain that potatoes will be scarce this year. There was a glut on the market in the past two seasons, and reduced production this year is no doubt an efTect of this. The weather, too, has affected the crops, many of which have suffered from frost daieage. Main crop potatoes are being dug on the Taieri, and with one or two exceptions that have been digging well, the average yield is low. Many of these crops were damaged by the frosts last January. The harvesting of red clover on the Taieri has been interrupted by the weather, but another fine week should see the harvest completed. Extremelj gratifying yields of two bags of field dressed seed have been obtained from crops already headed. Practically all country in Otago has experienced a satisfactory autumn for pasture production. Young pastures—those sown in the spring and autumn —are particularly good, having received every chance, and are showing satisfactory establishment. Lea ground in -Otago is being ploughed for wintering in preparation for the spring sowing of wheat and potatoes.
