WIDELY POPULAR
YOUTH HOSTEL MOVEMEMNT DEVELOPMENT IN BRITAIN “ Wide use is made of. the Youth Hostels’ Association by university students and young people from all walks of life," said Dr A. M. Douglas yesterday, when giving the Daily Times some impressions of his recent visit to Britain. i Dr Douglas said that the hostels were well planned and within reasonable walking distance. The association stipulated that one must not drive up to the front door in a car. Otherwise, they chiefly catered for the cyclists and the walkers. The hostels were scattered all over Britain, and were usually readily accessible from the large centres of population. The annual subscription was 10s, for which one obtained an identification card. Apart from that the fee of Is 6d a night was found to cover running costs which, of course, made financial considerations a bar to no one. Membership % in the Youth Hostels’ Association in any one country gave the holder similar privileges in any other country.
The State Mines Department took over the Burnwell Colliery, one of the biggest privately owned mines in the Reefton district, on April 30. The mine is the third major unit to be sold to the Mines Department in the Reefton area in the last year. The mine will continue production.
