Placed Horses at Ashburton to Meet

Five horses who took a prominent part in the finish of the Chatmos Hack Handicap at the Ashburton. County Racing Club’s meeting last Saturday are down to meet again in the G. B. Starkey Memorial Handicap at the Amberley meeting tomorrow. They are Flibbertigibbet (second), Peridot (third), Watchword (fourth), Hormond (fifth) and Pageant (sixth). Rebel Knight and Lights On complete the field of seven. Peridot was unlucky to be beaten at Ashburton, his saddle slipping inside the final furiong. He lias gone up lib for his third placing, while Flibbertigibbet has been raised 21b for her second. Watchword, who was forth, has risen lib. Hormond and Pageant are down to carry the same weights. Peridot will only need to receive an uninterrupted passage to be one of the hardest to beat. Flibbertigibbet came with a great run to finish second, half a head behind Terminate, and she would need to show little improvement to win. Lights On was a winner at Oamaru, but he has failed to show up since then. If the track is not too heavy he should race well. Jottings Whooray, winner of a hurdle race at the Avondale meeting last week, will be bracketed with Corineus in the Waikato Hurdles at Te Rapa to-morrow. The bracket should be among the favourites. Notification of the proposed dates for meetings in the new season must be sent to the secretary of the Racing Conference not later than May 19. Consistent Form The Defaulter three-year-old Infatuate finished full of running to win at Ashburton last Saturday and his consistent form will place him among the favourites for the Brackenfield Handicap at the Amberley meeting to-morrow. Lady Myrtle in Form Lady Myrtle, who was a winner at the Nelson and Marlborough meetings at her last starts, will be in demand in the Taipua Handicap at the Otaki-Maori meeting at Otaki to-morrow. She will be bracketed with a useful performer in Determination. Lengthy Spell Miss Bairnsfather, the top-weight in the, Mokoia Handicap at the Egmont meeting, has not been raced since the Manawatu meeting in December. She has only once been out of a place in nine starts this season. Likely Favourite Sally Gold’s second to Defectus in the Laghmor Stakes at Ashburton will no doubt bring her into favour for the Glasnevin Stakes at the Amberley meeting tomorrow. A four-year-old mare by Salmagundi, she is from Gold Label, by Robespierre from Sundance, by Sunny Lake from Showano, by St. Ambrose from Savanna, by Stepniak. Amberley Prospect Faithful Pal has been a consistent placegetter this season and the half-brother to Excellency is due for a winning break. He finished well to be third behind Clyde Bridge and Lexia at Ashburton over one mile last week and he will be better suited by the shorter journey in the Amberley Handicap at the Amberley meeting tomorrow. First Appearance Hansel is to make his first appearance over country in the Gardner Memorial Steeples at the Birchwood Hunt meeting to-morrow. After racing well on the flat earlier in the season he was given a spell and he resumed racing again at the Waimate meeting last month. He has had several starts since then, but has never been a possibility in any of them. Hansel is a member of the Mermaid family, which has produced several prominent winners this season, including Swanee. >
