PRICE CONTROLS LIFTED
MOTOR CARS AND TRUCKS NEW SOUTH WALES STATE Rec. 8 p.m. SYDNEY, May 10. Price controls on new motor cars and trucks have been lifted in New South Wales, according to the Minister in Charge of Prices, Mr F. J Finnan. Controls on second-hand cars were removed - on September 20, 1948, Mr Finnan said that his department would continue to watch closely fhe prices charged for new and second-hand vehicles and that if there were any •unjustifiable increases he would consider bringing them under control again. The president of the Chamber of Industries, Mr G. Allman, said that any increase in prices which would take place now would also have occurred under control. Undoubtedly distributors could sell American cars at a considerably higher price than formerly, but they would be looking to the future when an easing of the dollar position would bring about a buyers’ market. There had been several instances recently of pricecutting by large American motor firms, but it was too early yet to say whether this was symptomatic of a downward trend in prices. It was unlikely that the price of new cars from the United Kingdom would rise as the only thing which would bring this about wouls be a restriction on the volume of cars sent from Britain. New car prices have now been decontrolled in two of the six Australian States, the other being Victoria.
