BASIC PENSION

Increase Urged by R.S.A. Advice was received at the monthly meeting of the Oamaru RSA from the Gore RSA that the following remit Would com? before the annual meeting of the New Zealand RSA:—“That the basic pension be increased to £6 a week and the economic pension retained only for the wife and children of a married man.’’ It was pointed out. at the meeting that the average pension was less than the lowest standard wage in the Dominion. If those who were in receipt of an economic pension earned wages their pension was automatically cancelled. Mr I. T. Catto said the present position did nofc encourage those in receipt of pensions to work. The secretary, lMr A. C. Piper, said this remit opened up a big field, and the executive was not qualified to give an expression of opinion. It was decided to write to Dominion headquarters asking that the matter be referred to the Standing Committee for investigation.
