TOWN HALL CHIMES
Sir,—Let me 'commend Cr Armitage for frying to keep us those lovely chimes. I have lived in tire vicinity of the Town Hall for 60 years, and those chimes are part of my life. Now lam old they are company. I have had my nights of illness. and through the night I love to hear the sound of them. If the councillors really vsnt to stop noise let them give us more silent buses and taxis. The noise from the latter far outweighs the melody of the chimes. Another bell I miss very much is the lovely bell of St. Paul’s Cathedral. It is only heard for two minutes each" Wednesday night for service. Why do we not hear it calling people to church each Sunday as in the old days? This bell was presented by an Anglican and his wife in memory' of a loved daughter and only child, and it is indeed sad to think it has ceased to ring on Sundays. The church bells are part of English life, and how our distant friends and relations longed to hear them after the years of war. Do please let us keep our Town Hall bells chiming.—l am, etc..
