STRONG POSITION
OTAGO COMPETITORS UNIVERSITY TOURNAMENT SHIELD DEPENDENT ON LAWN TENNIS PA WELLINGTON, Apl. 18. Auckland University College easily retained the athletic championship at the inter-university tournament. They gained 27 points; their nearest rival. Canterbury, had 13, Otago 12, and Victoria 8. Victoria won the Women's Athletic Shield with 7 points. Otago also had seven points, but the shield was awarded to Victoria on the NZAAA ruling, as Victoria had won more events. Canterbury and Auckland each secured two points. Ducks Prominent Although " ducks ” were quite common in the inter-university cricket, few expected that they would be prominent in the swimming last night. They were. Students with a sense of humour released three of the live variety in the Riddiford baths during the swimming championships. The trio were obviously delighted to be in the water again and also a little apprehensive as to their ultimate fate. They eluded capture for a considerable period. Would-be capturers flounced about the baths in vain endeavours to trap their wily feathered friends. Two were at last seized and borne off triumphantly to their dubious fate, but the other paddled about unperturbed while two championship events were decided. Victoria Wins Cricket
The cricket wa s won decisively by Victoria from Canterbury. After obtaining a substantial lead in the first innings, they quickly wiped out the deficit made by Canterbury in the second innings of 189, obtaining the 82 runs required for the loss of only one wicket. Cornish made 52 not out. Canterbury’s second innings was notable for a century partnership between Kibblewhite and Chappie. Kibblewhite made 57 and Chappie 62. In the other match Auckland beat Otago on the first innings. Otago's first innings closed at 324, 80 behind. Auckland, with 167 for two, declared. Wells, who made 198 in the first innings, made 72 not out. and Hollywood 45. Otago replied with 129 for nine. Hollywood took six for 65. The cricket points were:—Victoria 5, Auckland 2, Canterbury 2, Otago nil. The universities’ team to play Wellington at Kelburn Park to-morrow and Wednesday is:—T. U. Wells (captain), J. Hollywood, J. Fisher (A.), R. Vance, R. Wilde, P. McCaw, J. Murray' (V.), J. Alderson, G. Coull (C.), S. Cameron, M. Buckenham (O.). Twelfth man, J. Thomson (O.). Basketball to Otago The hold that Canterbury has held on the University Basketball Shield for several years was broken yesterdav, when Otago scored a meritorious one-point win after a keenly-contested match. Soaked courts made playing conditions difficult, and the standard of play was surprisingly high in tlie circumstances. The results were Auckland 15, Victoria 10; Canterbury 9. Auckland 7; Otago 12, Canterbury 11. The teams announced for an interisland match to-morrow were;—North: M. Cook, A. Richardson, A. Cook (V.), M. King, L. Gracey, F. McDonald, F. Spence, L. Laidlaw (A.); emergency, M. Goss (A.). South; S. Budd, J. Dean, Maureen Barrett, L. Black (C.), B. Excells. P. Bell, L. Burch, G. Soper, Margaret Barrett (O.); emergency, J. Scouse (C.). Lawn Tennis Tlie last matches in the preliminary rounds of the lawn tennis were played today. The national champion, Robson, was never troubled to beat his less experienced Victoria opponent. 'Robson’s shrewd placements and variations in length proved too much for Arbuckle. White, of Canterbury, was a little too steady on the day for O’Connor, winning in straight sets. The finals will be played to-morrow. Points so far in lawn tennis are:— Canterbury 13, Otago 9, Victoria 6, Auckland 2. To-day’s results:— Men’s Singles.—E. White (C.) beat B.
