CITY FRUIT MARKET CABBAGE IN DEMAND A consignment of bananas from Fiji and Samoa arrived late on the city fruit markets, the whole of the shipment being taken up by retailers The bulk was in good order. Jonathan and Dunn .apples met a steady demand during the week, but small sizes were neglected by buyers. Quinces were slow of sale.

Choice-quality mushrooms are bringing satisfactory prices, and the few New Zealand lemons that came to hand were immediately taken up by retailers Tree tomatoes and passion fruit had a steady demand.

Heavy supplies of peaches reached the market, and prices for some lines were lower. Pears, however, are short of requirements. A few plums and nectarines are still arriving, with prices satisfactory. Tomatoes. mostly from Central Otago, have been coming forward, but the demand is confined to choice quality only, inferior being hard to place. Grapes were in heavy supply, but prices remained firm. There were ample supplies of cucumbers late in the week. Cabbage, which is in short supply, brought extreme prices at the weekend. Cauliflowers were also in demand, and prices were high.

Peas and beans met with a ready sale, and the inquiry for carrots, parsnips, beet and sprouts was steady. A shipment of pumpkins from Gisborne should be on the market by Tuesday. Marrow and jam melons have been in steady supply, but silver beet and lettuce have been slow of sale. Celery prices also dropped at the week-end. Range of Prices

Peaches: Trays. 6d to 8d lb; cases, 9s and 5s to 6s.

Plums: Trays, 9d to Is; cases, 8s 6d to 12s.

Grapes: Black Hamburg, 3s 4d to 4s lb; Gros Colmar, 5s 3d. Tomatoes: Nelson 18s to 20s case: Christchurch, 9d to Is lb; hothouse, Is 3d lb; Central Otago, 6d to Is lb.
