APPEAL FOR TEACHERS
EDUCATION CONFERENCE SHORTAGES IN PRIMARY AND COUNTRY SCHOOLS PA WELLINGTON, Apl. 14. A national appeal for married women teachers and for superannuitants to offer their services even on a part-time basis was recommended by a conference of education authorities in Wellington, which discussed means of getting more teachers for primary schools, particularly for assistantships in country schools. Teachers will also be asked to consider postponing applications for special leave to go overseas because of the difficulty of finding replacements.
The conference favoured a suggestion by the Minister of Education, Mr McCombs, who opened the conference, that an emergency training scheme should be instituted similar to that in force in England, as one of the means of meeting the shortage. In this way mature persons with suitable educational background would have a shortened course, possibly one year, and then after a year’s probationership would be certificated. This suggestion, it was announced, would be considered by the Education Department and the Government.
