SWEPT BY TORNADOES

FOUR AMERICAN STATES

TWENTY-FIVE PEOPLE KILLED

NZPA—Copyright Rec. 11.55 p.m. NEW YORK, Mar. 26. A series of tornadoes swept through four south and south-western American States to-day, killing at least 25 people. There were 16 deaths in Arkansas, six in Mississippi, one in Texas and two in Oklahoma. Two more are believed dead in Mississippi. The series of storms began on March 24 in Mississippi and Louisiana and broke out again to-day in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Mississippi. The Arkansas dead included 14 in the England-Scott cotton plantation section. Reports from the storm areas said that many people escaped injury because they took refuge in cellars before the tornadoes struck.

Tornadoes tore through two Texas towns early to-day, raced on to Crowder (Oklahoma) and then veered into Arkansas, leaving a trail of destruction across the State’s agricultural area and sweeping at least a dozen small communities.

Two small towns in Mississippi. Belden and Tupelo, were practically levelled.
