SCHOOL ATHLETES

CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING

SOUTHLAND’S SUCCESS

Special Correspondent INVERCARGILL. Mar. 27. The Otago and Southland secondary schools' twenty-third championship sports were held in wretched conditions at Rugby Park on Saturday. A week of stormy weather left the tracks in a sodden state and but for sunshine during the afternoon, the meeting would never have been held. Similar conditions prevailed four years ago, the last time the sports were held at Invercargill. In the circumstances, the competitors in all sections ran, hurdled and jumped remarkably well. Most surprising of all was the fact that records were equalled and broken, which strikingly demonstrated the quality of the young athlete being produced in the secondary schools to-day. The heavy conditions probably favoured the. Southland boys slightly, and in the senior section they had no difficulty in winning the Macassey Shield. Waitaki retained the Oswald Smith Shield for the intermediates, and Southland beat Waitaki by two points for the Arthur Barnett Shield for juniors.

outstanding performer of the sports was R. M. Johnston, a Southland junior, who broke the 80 Yards Hurdles record twice during the afternoon. He recorded 11 l-ssec in his heat, but that record was not allowed because of a tail wind blowing. Later in the day, under calm conditions, he repeated the performance and the record was allowed. In the 90 Yards Hurdles for intermediates, A. J. Smith, of St. Kevin’s (Oamaru), equalled the record of 12 2-ssec. Another feature was the success of B. J. Dunn (St. Kevin's) in the intermediate High Jump, his jump of sft lin easily beating the senior jump of 4ft lOin. A. E. Levett (Southland), who won the Otago junior title earlier in the month, proved his superiority by winning the 440 and 880 Yards senior events. G. Ford, of Waitaki, was the foremost intermediate sprinter and B. Galliven (Christian Brothers’) won both the junior sprints. Results:— Senior Championship 100 Yards.—W. Marshall (Otago) 1, I.
