BETTY THE RABBIT GIVEN A REPRIEVE

Special to the Daily Times AUCKLAND Mar. 25. For the second time within her short life of a little over 12 months, Betty the Rabbit has evaded the death penalty. In 1947, her life was spared illegally. Today, her young owner, the 12-year-old David Hoyle, o£ Remuera road, received advice that the Department of Agriculture had issued a permit for Betty’s sentence to be one of life imprisonment. Betty first came into the news for her remarkable return journey to captivity after being released four miles from her home. This occupied nearly four months. An order that she was to be destroyed was then issued by the Department of Agriculture under the Rabbit Nuisance Act, 1928. There was great jubilation in the Hoyle home to-day when it was learned that Betty’s reprieve had been officially sanctioned.
