DIVERSION OF WAIKATO

PA AUCKLAND, Mar. 25. The first stage in the diversion of the Waikato River to enable the Maraetai dam to be built was completed to-day, when Mr G- Sherman, overseer of works at Mangakino, fired a charge which blew up a rock barrier covering the inlet to the diversion tunnel. With a deafening roar, over half a ton of gelignite shattered the rock and soil harrier and threw large rocks and a broad sheet of water hundreds of feet up the cliff face at the inlet. Draglines and excavating equipment near the tunnel, which were covered to prevent damage by falling rocks, were not affected by the explosion, but a sandbag shelter' for photographers, overlooking the inlet, collapsed with the blast. No one was hurt.
