GREEN FEED
FURTHER AREAS SOWN FAVOURABLE WEATHER Conditions this week have for the most part been dry but the weather is now much cooler, 'and since the rains last week-end there has been a good growth. As conditions are favourable, farmers are inclined to sow further areas of green feed, etc. . . Wheat.—Merchants are now receiving orders for seed wheat in anticipation of an early sowing. There have been some inquiries from growers for the new Hilgendorf wheat, supplies of which are available. There will be some stacked lines threshed this coming week, but for the most part the wheat harvest is cleaned up. Oats.—While very few fresh orders have been received from the North Island, it is expected that white oats will be required later in the season. The quality of the North Otago white oats is better than it has been for some previous seasons, and yields have been fairly satisfactory. With the poor North Island demand for Algerians this season, it is expected that more white oats will be sewn in future. Barley.—The harvest is about completed and most of the lines have gone into consumption. The Golden Archer and Plumage Archer varieties have done well this season. Seeds.—The activity, mostly m grass seed, has continued this week, and markets remain firm. There have been very few local lines on offer, as in a number of cases growers have been dressing and using their own lines for autumn sowing. There has been a fairly good retail inquiry so far this autumn. Owing to the dry period, a number of paddocks have to be" sown down.
