LIGHT SENTENCES
ASSAULTS ON WOMEN DEPUTATION TO MINISTER PA WELLINGTON, Mar. 25 Seeking information regarding the case at Marton this week in which a man convicted of murder while serving overseas had been sentenced to two months’ imprisonment for common assault on a girl aged 16, execu-. tive officers of the National Council of Women waited yesterday afternoon on the Minister of Justice, Mr Mason The deputation, consisting of the president, Mrs M. J. Forde, the secretary Mrs D. Graham, and the treasurer, Mrs V. A. May, subsequently stated that they were informed that the original case was not one for the Department of Justice, and that the man concerned had been tried and subsequently released by the military authorities. At a recent meeting of the Dominion Executive of the National Council of Women the question of light sentences imposed for assaults on women and girls was considered, and the deputation yesterday discussed the matter with the Minister, from whom, it was stated to-day, it received a very sympathetic hearing.
