ACCUSED’S ADMISSION
MURDER CONVICTION OVERSEAS PA WANGANUI. Mar. 23. A man who admitted that while he was serving overseas with the New Zealand forces he was convicted of murder and sentenced to death, pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate’s Court at Marton to common assault on a girl aged 16. He was convicted and sentenced to two months’ imprisoned to two months’ imprisonment with hard labour. He was Isaac Johnson, married, of Marton Junction. Under cross-examination by Sergeant V. B. Arnold, the accused admitted that when serving with the forces, he was convicted of murder and sentenced to death. That sentence was commuted to life imprisonment and he returned to New Zealand to serve his time. He was released last year. He also admitted under cross-examination that he had twice before been convicted of assault in Feilding in 1938 and in Marton in 1940,
