OBITUARY

MR C. E. G. KERR MLr Cyril Eric George Kerr, whose death at the age of 43 occurred in Dunedin recently, was well known in business and sporting circles in both Otago and Southland. He joined the firm of Scoullar and Chisholm, Ltd., in Invercargill, and rose from a junior position to that of manager of the Dunedin warehouse. He w.as employed by the firm for 27 years. Before the war, Mr Kerr was a member of the territorials, but transferred to the artillery in 1940. He won a commission and served overseas in the Pacific area. As a sportsman, Mr Kerr was a Southland Association football representative, playing in the centre-for-ward position. He was president of the Waimana Tennis Club and took a keen interest in the coaching of younger players. During his 12 years with the club, he won its Senior Championship five times, and in 1937 won the B Grade Singles title at the Easter tournament in Dunedin. He was runner-up for the Centennial Doubles title last year. A keen philatelist. Mr Kerr became well known to Station 4YA listeners before the war as the “stamp man.” A prominent churchman, he was a member of the Church of Christ at Invercargill and Dunedin, and held posts as a Sunday School superintendent and Bible Class leader. He was also a member of the Morning Star Masonic Lodge. Mr Kerr is survived by his wife.
