LABOUR M.P. PREDICTS NATIONALISATION OF BRITISH MEAT TRADE

NZPA Special Correspondent Rec. 9 p.m. LONDON, Mar. 23. State control of the British meat trade is forecast by a Labour member of Parliament “based on the assumption that the Labour Government will be returned to power at the general election.’’ He is Mr C. Royle, who represents Salford West in the House of Commons and his remarks were made in an address to the retail butchers’ buying committee for Brighton Hove and Portslade. “ I feel I am justified in making the prophecies,” he said, “ because I know some of the things that are going on behind the scenes.” Bulk purchase would continue, he said. Importers would be bought out and the Government would establish a commodity commission which would become the owners of all imported

meat. Cold storage would be publicly owned and slaughter houses would be controlled. “The nationalising of wholesaling under a commodity commission ” would be part of the policy if the Labour Government were returned at the next election. They would be responsible for dealing with all meat down to the retail level. The nationalisation of retail distributive trades would not be in the programme
