CASE AGAINST SHARKEY

SEAMEN’S UNION THREAT “INDUSTRIAL ACTION” IF PROSECUTED NZPA—Copyright SYDNEY, Mar. 23. The Seamen’s Union has threatened “ industrial action ” if L. L. Sharkey, secretary of the Communist Party, is prosecuted under the Crimes Act. Two summonses alleging seditious utterances have been served on Sharkey, and the case is listed for hearing next Monday. In Canberra the Prime Minister, Mr Chifley, declined to comment on the resolution passed by the Combined Mining Unions’ Council demanding that the Federal Government withdraw the summonses issued against Sharkey and the repeal of the Crimes Act.

It was stated authoritatively, however, that the prosecution will go on.
