Import Licences Doubled For This Year’s Supply of Crockery and Glassware
Special Correspondent WELLINGTON, Mar. 22. The shortage of crockery and glassware about which New Zealand merchants and retailers recently expressed grave concern will be relieved to a considerable extent by a new decision of the Customs Department on imports.
Under the 1949 import schedule the allowance for crockery and glassware was 50 per cent, of the 1948 licences. With stocks depleted after Christmas and many licences already drawn upon, retailers were faced with a serious shortage, and for some time representations to the Minister of Customs, Mr Nash, brought no result. The Customs Department has now announced that imports for 1949 of crockery will be double the original amount allowed—namely 100 per cent, of the 1948 licences. Retailers report that the increased licences will be of considerable help but will still leave imports a long was short of requirements.
