Copper Coin Pulls Up Lame

Special to the Daily Times CHRISTCHURCH. Mar. 23.

The sand track at Riccarton has been out of commission for more than a week while it is being repaired. Some time will elapse before it is ready for use by the trainers, as a lot of work is involved in giving the whole of the circuit a fresh covering of sand. Copper Coin, a five-year-old mare by Leighon from Penny Wise, half-sister to the Stewards’ Handicap winner. Not Out, pulled up lame after doing pace work on the plough at Riccarton this morning. She looked like going on to good class as a stayer when she ran out of hack class with an impressive win, under a big weight in a mile race at the Grand National meeting in 1947. Since she resumed after a spell, however, she has been a source of much worr - to E. W. Rosewarne and she has not raced this season. She had been working well lately but now her prospects do not look so bright. Front Page, who struck himself while schooling over hurdles a few days ago, i“ making good progress towards recovery and B. H. Brodie hopes to have him in work again soon. Gay Fort is training on well and C. G. Humphries hopes to take him north in May for a steeplechase programme at the Waikato and Auckland meetings. He may be accompanied by Dark Arrow, who showed good form on a soft track last June, when he won the three chief flat events at the Dunedin winter meeting.
