TRAWLING OPERATIONS

Sir,—Your report on the fishermen’* meeting at Port Chalmers on Saturday evening last was news to a number of fishermen and boat owners, who did not know such a meeting was being held. Resentment of the Tiaroa is perhaps natural, but it must be remembered that a section of the fishermen recommended that this vessel be bought instead of a smaller motor trawler. Area fishing is really the fact that a few boats in some of the smaller port* object to any boat being licensed in their particular port, and also want the higherpowered Port Chalmers boats kept away so that they may keep these big spaces of fishing grounds to themselves. Some of these small ports that are most persistent in their demands contain only two small trawlers and two or three even smaller line boats. The closed season is a question for experts. The successful fisherman is only expert in the catching of fish.—l am, etc., Fisherman.
