“AXIS SALLY” FOUND GUILTY OF TREASON

NZPA—Copyright Rec. 10 p.m. WASHINGTON,, Mar. 10. A jury to-day found Mildred Gillars (Axis Sally), aged 48, guilty of treason in making Nazi propaganda broadcasts during the war. Judge Edward Curran did not indicate when he would pass sentence. The maximum penalty for treason is death. The minimum is five years’ imprisonment and a fine of 10,000 dol-

lars. No civilian has ever been executed for treason against the United States Government. As soon as the verdict was announced, Gillars’s lawyer, Mr James Laughlin, announced that he would seek a new trial. Failing that he would appeal to the United States Circuit Court of Appeals. Mr Laughlin complained that the judge’s instructions to the jury were “ inflamatory.”
