NIGHTLY GELDING SHOWS PROMISE AS A HURDLER
Special to the Dally Times CHRISTCHURCH, Mar. 11,
H. Nurse Is educating one of his team over the pony hurdles. He is a Nightly gelding, who shows great promise as a jumper, but he is an unknown quantity as a galloper, as he has not been tried for speed. His brother, Rakata, was a useful performer two seasons ago, when he had one win and was placed in six other races. A. E. and W. A. McMullan have the three-year-old Top Deck in work again. He looks well after a spell, and it is hoped to have him ready for winter racing, probably starting off with a trip to Greymouth in May.
Excellent Flight, an Airway three-year-old filly In C. Emerson’s stable, has done well in his work lately, and she looks well. She has a brilliant turn of speed, but she seems to lack stamina.
Profane, a Probation three-year-old, looked like making a good stayer when he won a mile race at Ashburton in the spring, but he has not trained on. He has had an easy time lately, but he is again striding along in useful tasks and C. Emerson is hopeful that he will Show improved form later in the season.
Though Citrll has shown his best form so far at six and seven furlongs, she was second in the mile Jockey Club Handicap at Riccarton this season. Her ownertrainer, F. A. Roberts, intends to try her over more ground and she has been nominated for the Awapuni Gold Cup, a mile and a-quarter race, at weight for age.
